Hello,

I have a problem with my server.

The server is hosting my free hosting site (http://www.ahplace.com) and the load gets extremely high (up to 30) even though there are only 30 connections via Apache. Mysql is on a different hard drive already. Home directory is also in a different hard drive. I never optimized Mysql, Apache or PHP before so can anyone help me with a config suitable for my server? I will post an update of my top when the load gets high.

Your main problem is your kernel version. Once you upgrade your kernel, everything's will be sorted out. However be warned, that installing a kernel is an extremely tough and risky job when it's done remotely and may often result in much downtime or even an OS reload (depend on few rules of your datacenter).

Get some expert to do it for you. I recommend the guys at totalserversolutions.com .. You need a fresh kernel compile, and you can go for the latest one at kernel.org.

Please do not attempt it yourself and get a professional to do it for you. Or ask your host/service provider about possible solutions to an kernel upgrade. If you cannot get someone to upgrade it for you, your last bet is to change server.

How can I tell if its my kernel problem or not? I have full access to my server as I have my own rack. So just upgrading the kernel will work?

You can google about "2.6.9-34 and high IO_WAIT". It's a known bug with 2.6.9x kernels. Upgrading the kernel should help you get rid of the issue. However, even after upgrading the kernel, the load isnt too satisfactory, you can let me know and I will give you advice on optimizations.

I successfully upgraded my kernel to one that doesn't have the I/O wait issues. The load is at 1 or lower, any suggestions to even make it faster?

Please post your my.cnf file content and key settings from httpd.conf such as TimeOut, KeepAlive, KeepAliveTimeout, MaxClients, MinSpareServers, MaxSpareServers ..

Also post the output of "free -m" and "top" command. Good to know that upgrading kernel has solved most of your issues with the load .
